Neurotransmitter abnormalities

Neurotransmitter abnormalities: Early childhood is typified by an increased production of serotonin compared to the levels of adulthood.  One study suggests that autistic children make less serotonin than normal children.91 Some autistic children have over-activity of dopamine.  Treatment of autistic children with dopamine antagonists has shown clinical improvements in some.

HBOT has been shown to reduce the uptake of serotonin and thus might function as an SSRI antidepressant.  HBOT was also shown to decrease the release of dopamine.  HBOT might improve the neurotransmitter imbalances found in some autistic individuals.
