HBOT in Politics

As much as the private celebrity industry may praise the benefits that HBOT has had in their personal lives, the treatment will continue to be limited by most health care programs until it gains FDA approval.  This is extremely difficult to do without the aid of Congress to pass the bills that provide the funding.

HBOT is largely being pushed through Congress on the basis that it can help veterans who have experienced Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) or who are currently suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Dr. Carol Hendricks, a long-time practitioner of HBOT, testified in front of the United States House Committee on Veteran Affairs about the benefits of HBOT on a soldier who suffered from severe TBI.  Texas Congressman Pete Sessions furthered this agenda by stating:

“Thousands of our brave servicemen and women are returning from combat with severe limb injuries, Traumatic Brain Injuries and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders, resulting in an inability to hold a job, properly care for their families, or, in some cases, overcome suicidal tendencies… As a nation, we have the responsibility for their care and recovery, and I am particularly encouraged with the potential of expanding hyperbaric therapy to treat brain-injured solders suffering from TBI and PTSD.”154

Dr. Paul Harch, Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Louisiana State University of Medicine in New Orleans, presented evidence that shows HBOT is effective in treating chronic brain injury to the Subcommittee on Labor, Health, Human Services and Education of the House of Representatives Appropriations Committee.  His studies have shown effective results in healing and even reversing the damage done by a variety of neurological diseases including cerebral palsy, Alzheimer’s and autism, as well as alcoholism and substance abuse.155
