Glucose levels need to be checked prior to each hyperbaric oxygen treatment to prevent possible CNS toxicity due to hypo/hyperglycemia. Although not understood it has been seen that HBOT causes blood glucose levels to fall. Glucose should be monitored after treatment as well and insulin doses may need to be adjusted during the course of treatment. Staff may suggest that the diabetic patient take in some orange juice in case they feel symptoms of low blood sugar. Staff should make sure the diabetic patient is not released until blood sugar levels are normal.
