A balanced daily vitamin intake is recommended during HBOT treatment. Vitamin A is suggested for adequate inflammatory response. It also plays a role in collagen synthesis and counteracts the catabolic effect of glucocorticosteroids on wound healing. Vitamin A is important in maintaining the normal defense mechanisms and limiting complications associated with infected wounds, and essential for epithelial integrity.
Vitamin C supports collagen synthesis and fibroblast mitosis. It increases activation of immune cells to the injured site, and affects the strength and generation of the extracellular matrix.
Zinc is also needed for collagen synthesis and is a cofactor in numerous enzyme reactions. Zinc deficiency reduces rates of epithelialization and decreases wound strength.
Vitamin E taken on a daily basis during the course of HBOT has shown to be effective in reducing the risk of oxygen toxic seizures.
