Metabolic Disorders

Metabolic disorders result from primary and secondary infections.  Malabsorption and diarrhea rapidly lead to muscle wasting and debilitation in patients with AIDS.  The ability of the cell membrane to absorb lipids is compromised.  With an increase in triglycerides, gastrointestinal mucosa and endothelial cells cannot absorb lipids.

HBOT improves blood circulation to the bowel and reduces gases caused by toxin-producing organisms.  Ischemia of the soft tissues, enteritis colitis and proctitis secondary to radiation treatment occurs.  Because HBOT increases the cell membrane’s absorption of lipids, weight gain is seen in the first week of combination therapy with nutritional supplementation.
