Ocular Disorders

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is frequently seen in the late stages of AIDS.  HBOT used adjunctively with drugs has reduced adverse reactions to the drugs and increased perfusion to the central artery of the retina can resolve ischemia of the microcirculation of the eye.  Edema improves, as does pain.  Healing is increased with HBOT.

Hypoxia causes retinopathy, with the same pathophysiology as seen in diabetes.

Treatment of P. carinii and herpes simplex of the eye with adjunctive HBOT is used based on the experience with HBOT in systemic Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP).  Again, aggressive and rapid treatment of these infections saves lives and health care dollars.
